Self-Luminous Tritium Light Sources - FAQ

Self-luminous tritium exit and safety signs contain glass tubes internally coated with zinc sulfide phosphor and filled with tritium gas.  As the tritium decays it emits electrons that in turn cause the phosphor to glow providing a continuous, failsafe light source.

Signs with a 10, 15 or 20 year life are available. Tritium decays at a defined rate which allows us to accurately calculate how much tritium to load into each sign to achieve the required brightness for the stated life of the sign.  The required brightness level is determined by NFPA and UL standards. Each sign is labeled with the manufacture date and life rating.

SRBT self-luminous signs are always on so there is nothing you need to do to “turn” them on.  During normal lighted conditions, visibility is provided by the contrast of the clear letters against the colored background. In dark conditions, the sign is self-illuminated by the tritium lights contained within.  The contrast ratio between the letters and the background is determined by UL standards and provides visibility from at least 100 feet.

SRBT self-luminous signs are completely self-powered.  Our exit and safety signs are on and working 24/7 and require no charging, maintenance or testing.  You merely install them and don’t worry about them for up to 20 years.

Tritium signs emit no radiation.  Tritium is a naturally occurring, low level beta radiation which has much less penetrative power than the isotope contained in a home smoke detector.  The tritium gas is safely sealed in glass tubes which are mounted in a shock resistant housing manufactured to meet or exceed UL and ANSI standards.

SRBT signs do not carry those ratings since those ratings apply exclusively to electrical products.  SRBT signs require no electricity and have no ignition source so they are perfect for use in sensitive areas such as fuel depots, munitions storage areas or anywhere that ignition sources would be of concern.

SRBT exit and safety signs contain a number of individual tubes mounted in a high impact housing designed to be tamper, vandal and shock resistant which makes breaking a tube an unlikely event.  Should a sign be damaged to the point that the tubes are compromised contact SRBT to request advice, disposal and replacement information.

Contact SRBT for information on replacement and/or disposal of expiring exit signs, regardless of the manufacturer.  In some cases we can provide free or deeply discounted prices for disposal services.  For additional information click on the Disposal-Recycling button on the menu at the right of this page.
